HEATING

  • Sealing air leaks is more efficient than adding more insulation-1, but aftter you fix those air leaks, bring your insulation-2 up to code.
  • To check for leaks put a small candle next to the window or door seal on a windy day and see if the flame flickers at all.
  • Hot water heater temperatures should be set between 120 deg. F and 130 deg F (49 - 54 deg C).
  • All exposed hot water pipes and the first 5 ft of cold water pipes coming out of the H2O heater should be insulated with pre-formed foam sleeves or R-11 batts.
  • Programmable thermostats are more efficient for people who are gone each day to work or who may have different schedules on the weekends from the weekdays.
  • To get the most comprehensive picture of how you can improve your home's energy usage, get an energy audit done by a professional. Check with your utility or local government's energy agency and see if they offer them as a free service or give discounts.
  • To perform a more basic audit yourself go to our energy audit page (coming soon) and see what is needed.
