Q: Is this a contest?
A: Yes, in that there is growing consensus that carbon emissions into the atmosphere are either causing or accelerating global climate change and that we only have a short period of time in which to reduce those emissions. No, it is not in that we are not giving out prizes (at this time) for people to reduce their carbon emissions. But if you follow our Energy Saving Tips then you will be saving lots of money on your utility bills already!
Q: Why aren’t carbon offsets allowed to reduce my carbon emissions?
A: Because they in fact do not reduce your personal carbon emissions. They may help to reduce the carbon emissions of a new building or power plant, but this website was built to help you improve your personal energy efficiency and by doing so reduce your carbon emissions. If you really want to purchase carbon offsets, do this. Follow some of the Energy Saving Tips on this site and then use the money that you will be saving to purchase offsets for your now smaller carbon footprint.
Q: Why is my carbon footprint different from other sites that I have visited?
A: This is most likely due to the statistics used to calculate your emissions. At carboncontest.com™ we have started with state electricity data and individual car fuel efficiency data rather than using national averages.
Q: What’s the fastest (and easiest) method for me to save money on my utilities?
A: Well this really depends on where you live and the cost of your utilities. If you live in Hawaii and you are paying $0.22per kWh I would say that changing out incandescent light bulbs for compact fluorescent models would be a good start. If you currently have an old and inefficient furnace and are paying high oil or natural gas prices, this would be your best bet. Check out our Calculators (coming soon) page to determine the payback of our different Energy Saving Tips.
